EQUESTRIAN
First appearance in the Central American and Caribbean Games: 1935

Equestrianism is the only sport of the Pan American Games in which the athlete and the animal form a whole. The importance of each is divided in such a way that equestrianism is also one of the few sports in which men and women compete against each other. The history of the sport can be confused with the history of civilization itself, when man began to use the horse as a means of transportation and went on to train it. But the International Equestrian Federation was not created until 1921. At that point, equestrianism was broadly practiced in its three categories.

Jumping is the most well-known category and, depending on the competition, the competitor who covers a predetermined course in the least time possible, knocks the least number of obstacles over or accumulates the highest amount of points wins. In dressage, the winner is determined by an evaluation of judges, who analyze the performance in mandatory movements and freestyle choreography. Lastly, the combined training event is a category where the competition lasts three days, including dressage, endurance (subdivided in four phases), and jumping.
