Men's Team Handball: Nicaragua breezes by El Salvador.

Mayagüez, Puerto Rico (July 29, 2010)- Nicaragua’s national men's handball team defeated El Salvador 34 goals to 19 at the XXI Central American and Caribbean Games in Mayaguez 2010.

This game was held in “El Mani” Pavilion at Mayagüez. With this victory in hand the Nicaraguan team will dispute the fifth position with Guatemala tomorrow, Friday. The Salvadoran team was eliminated without achieving a single victory, thus ending in seventh place.

 The best scorer for Nicaragua was Eduardo Ruiz with 11 points. The best scorer for the losing team was Jossue Merino with 5 goals. The Nicaraguan team goalkeeper, Erick Silva, had an excellent contribution to the victory of his team.

 

Women’s Taekwondo: Medals for Venezuela, Mexico and the Dominican Republic.

Isabela, Puerto Rico (July 29, 2010) - Venezuelan Midalys Marino, the Dominican Deysy Montes de Oca, and Mexico's Maria Espinoza finished loaded with gold medals in the Taekwondo sport at the XXI Central American and Caribbean  Games- Mayaguez 2010.
 
Mariño looked comfortable against her opponent Disnansi Polanco, of the Dominican Republic, and managed to overcome her with a final score of 5:3, pushing her towards the silver medal in the 53 kgs competition. In this division, the bronze medal was given to Puerto Rican Sara Ramos and the Guatemalan Euda Carias, who defeated their rivals from the Virgin Islands (22:0) and Mexico (5:3), respectively.
 
In the 73 kg weight class, the Colombian Sybil Venegas won the silver medal after suffering a setback against the Mexican Espinoza, who won the gold medal with a score of 4:0. The Dominican Candy Lorenzo and Venezuelan Teresa Guevara rose to win the bronze medal.
 
Dominican Republic was crowned winner of the competition in the heavyweight division (73+ kg),by hands of  Deysy Montes de Oca who defeated the Mexican Guadalupe Ruiz 9:7 in combat, who had to settle for the silver medal. The fighter from Costa Rica, Katherine Allen, as well as Trinidad and Tobago's Amelia Corbie, rose to take bronze medals.
 
The competition took place in the Jose "Buga" Abreu Coliseum, in Isabela.
 

Men’s Taekwondo: Medals Summary.

Isabela, Puerto Rico (July 29, 2010)- The Mexican Salvador Perez won (3:0) against Kristopher Moitland (Costa Rica) to win the gold medal in the heavyweight class at the XXI Central American and Caribbean Games, held at the  Jose "Buga" Abreu,  in Isabela.
 
Moitland had to settle for silver. The bronze medals went to Puerto Rican Adrian Puello, and Haitian Jimmy Chery.

 
Dominican Republic dresses in gold in 63 kilos


Dominican Jairo Rijo won the gold medal by defeating the Guatemalan Federico Rosal 1:0 at the 63 kilos weight class. Rosal took the silver medal and the bronze went to the Haitian Jocelin Joseph and Venezuelan Hernan Villafañe.

The Dominican Richard Alcantara defeated  the Guyanese Adrian Spellen
(7:2) to win the gold medal in the 87 kilos men's taekwondo weight class. Speller won the silver medal, and bronze was taken by Kenneth Edwards, of Jamaica, and Carlos Rivas of Venezuela.
 

Men's Basketball: Changes in the Calendar

San Germán, Puerto Rico (July 29, 2010) - Víctor Ortíz, Director of the basketball tournament of the XXI Central American and Caribbean Sports Games Mayagüez 2010, informed various changes in the calendar of men’s basketball.

For today, July 29, the game that was due on 10:00 AM for the third and fourth place was eliminated, since there was no fourth place in the section.  The tickets acquired for today, Thursday, can be used without any problem.  The games for today, Thursday, will be played in the Arquelio Torres Ramírez Coliseum in San Germán. 

Tomorrow, Friday July 30, all the games will be played in the Sports and Recreation Palace in Mayagüez.  The game for the seventh place that was due at 2:00 PM was eliminated because there are only seven teams.  The game that is set to be on 9:00 PM of that day is moved to 1:00 PM.  This game will be played for the fifth position.  The game for the bronze medal that was due on 9:00 PM, both on July 30, date that ends the Central American basketball.

Felipe Pérez Grajales,  President of the Organization Committee Mayagüez 2010 said that they have taken the necessary measures in respect to the ticketing in order to guarantee the public who has acquire tickets can enter the sports facilities.  “For us, the enjoyment of the public in the Games is of utter importance.  We are close to 3 days to finish this great Project, were are really certain that this Event will become a profound memory to everyone that has in one way or another lived this great experience,”concluded Pérez Grajales.

 

Men’s Basketball: Jamaica Defeats the British Virgin Islands.

San Germán, Puerto Rico (July 29, 2010) – The Jamaican team defeated the British Virgin Islands 75-68 in overtime, during the game for the classification of the fifth and seventh place of the Central American Basketball.

The regular time ended tied at 65 when Jamaica made a run of 9-0 in the last minutes of the game.

In extra time, Jamaica took control of the offense, even though the British Virgin Islands made the first basket.  Nevertheless, Jamaica made two field goals, one of them from Alleem Scoh and he also made one of the two free throws in order for Jamaica to take the lead 71-68, with 34 seconds left on the clock, securing the win with two free throws of Andre Smith with only 19 seconds to go.

For Jamaica, the best scorer and the hero of the game was Alleem Scoh with 20 points and Ricardo Alliman had a great presence in the boards by capturing 22 rebounds.

For the British Virgin Islands, Chaurbin Smith scored 16 points.

Jamaica will face Panama tomorrow, Friday, at 1:00 in the afternoon, in the first game of the final day of Central American basketball in the Sports and Recreational Palace, in Mayagüez.
