BASKETBALL
First appearance in the Central American and Caribbean Games: 1926
Basketball was invented in December 1891 by the Canadian professor James W. Naismith and is considered a collective precision sport, since the objective of the game is to put a small object in a basket placed 3.05 m high in the two extremes of the court. The game is played by two teams of five players each and the team with the highest number of points wins. There are three ways of scoring points: free throws (throws awarded during fouls, worth one point), small and medium range throws (worth two points) and long distance throws, from behind a curved line that is 6.25 m away from the basket (worth three points). Each game has 40 minutes of game time, divided into four 10-minute quarters.
