BOXING
First appearance in the Central American and Caribbean Games: 1950

Boxing is one of the most ancient forms of combat. This sport was already popular seven Centuries before Christ, and in the 17th Century, people already boxed for money in England. However, in the Olympic and Pan American Games, amateur boxing is held. Fights last three rounds each of which is 3 minutes long, and athletes must use gloves, shoes, mouth guards, cups and head gear, in order to protect their personal safety. There are two ways of determining the winner: one is by number of punches, counted by the judges, and the other is by KO (knockout) that is, when one of the boxers falls and cannot continue the fight. The sport is divided into 12 categories, according to the weight of the athletes.
