CANOE AND KAYAK

Consists of competitions in two types of boats (canoe and kayak) and different settings (calm water for canoe sprint and turbulent waters for slalom). In RIO 2007, only canoe sprint will be held. In this sport, boats are manned by one, two or four persons, separated by lanes, and competing in distances of 500 m and 1,000 m. Canoes are open boats, manned by athletes kneeling on one knee with a single bladed paddle.

The oldest archeological evidence of a canoe is six thousand years old, from the Sumerian civilization, which colonized the Euphrates River in the Middle East. American Indians in North and South American and natives of Polynesia also were known to use such ships. Kayaks, on the other hand, which are closed boats, manned by seated kayakers with double bladed paddles- were invented by Eskimos and transformed into modern kayaks by the British lawyer John MacGregor.
