SOCCER
First appearance in the Central American and Caribbean Games: 1930

The most popular of all sports on the planet was at one point prohibited in England (a country which, subsequently would give it its modern format, with the formation of the English Association in 1863) in the 14th and 15th Century, due to the enormous disorder that each match caused in British cities. However, dividing a group of players into two teams with the purpose of guiding a ball with their feet to a defined objective - the goal - already constituted a game similar to soccer in Ancient Greece, in the Roman Empire and in Imperial China. In its current format, the male Olympic competition is restricted to players up to 23 years of age, with the exception of three older players for each team. It has not yet been defined if the Rio 2007 Pan American Games will follow these same rules.
