TAEKWONDO
First appearance in the Central American and Caribbean Games: 1992

Even though taekwondo, a traditional Korean martial art, is thousands of years old, it only acquired its modern format in 1955 when a group of Korean teachers was able to unite different schools under the format that is known today as taekwondo. The sport is divided into four categories, according to the weight of the athletes. In bouts, athletes, who use protective gear for the head, chest, and abdomen, score points by connecting blows with feet or hands. Kicks can be thrown against any part of the body above the waist; but blows with hands can only be thrown against the adversary’s chest. Bouts consist of three three-minute rounds, and an athlete can win in one of three ways: by knockout, by scoring the highest amount of points or due to the opponent being disqualified.
