VOLLEYBALL
First appearance in the Central American and Caribbean Games: 1930
Like basketball, volleyball is a sport with a well-defined origin. In 1895, professor William G. Forman created this event, then known as minonette, with rules that are a little different from the current rules. Volleyball is played by two teams of six athletes, separated by a net over which the ball must pass in order to win points. Each game is won by the winner of five sets. The first four are played up to 25 points (unless there is a draw at 24, case in which the set will continue until one of the teams obtains an advantage of two points), and the last one is played up to 15 (with the same rule in case of a draw at 14 points). In order to win a point, a team must make the ball fall on the opponent’s side, having a maximum of three touches, besides the blocking contact. Nowadays, athletes can use any part of the body to touch the ball, but they cannot retain it or throw it. A player cannot touch the ball two consecutive times, with the exception of the blocking action.
