ATHLETICS
First appearance in the Central American and Caribbean Games: 1926
No other sport is associated more with the Olympic spirit than athletics. The first competition in the Olympic Games of antiquity was a race of approximately 192 meters. For this reason, in most of the attempts to revive the Olympic Games of the 19th Century, only athletics competitions were held. There are records of competitions to see who is the fastest, who jumps the farthest or the highest, or who throws the furthest, from the year of 776 BC. In the Modern Games, athletics split into track events (for speed, medium and long distances, relay, hurdles, and steeplechase), jumping events (long, high, triple and pole), throwing events (shot put, discus, javelin, and hammer) lane events (marathon and walk) and combined events (heptathlon and decathlon).
