FENCING
First appearance in the Central American and Caribbean Games: 1926

Fencing is a form of combat with swords. Even though the most remote origin dates back two millennia before Christ, fencing only became a competition sport in 1874, when the first American fencing school was established. The sport has single and team competitions, with three types of weapons: épée, foil, and sable. Athletes compete on mats that are 14 m long and 1.5 m wide, and the objective is to touch the adversary without being touched. In qualifying rounds, the athlete who achieves five touches or lasts four minutes without being touched wins.

In the elimination rounds, the number of touches increases to 15 and time increases to 9 minutes. Through special clothing and cables, athletes are connected to an electronic system that counts each touch.
