WEIGHTLIFTING
First appearance in the Central American and Caribbean Games: 1938

The sports practice of weightlifting started at the end of the 19th Century, particularly in the decade of 1890, when the federations for this sport arose in France and Russia. The sport grew through the years, until it incorporated the practice of women at the end of the 20th Century. In total, there are 15 categories based on the weight of the athletes. The competition is divided into three tests. In the “snatch”, the athlete has to hold the weight over his ahead in one sole movement. In the “clean and jerk”, the athletes make two movements: first, holding the weights at the height of the shoulders in order to then, immediately, lift them over the head. The sum of the performance in these two tests results in the total score, the third test. Each athlete has three opportunities to lift the weights, and the purpose is very simple: whoever lifts the most, wins. In the event of a tie, the decision is based on the scale: whoever weighs the least, wins. If they are still tied, whoever lifted the winning weight first, wins.
