SOFTBALL
First appearance in the Central American and Caribbean Games 1974
Softball is basically a lighter version of baseball. The origin of this sport dates back to 1887, in the United States, when George Hancock invented a way to practice baseball in indoor gyms. In little time, the sport went outdoors and, in the 1920s obtained its current name. Softball, which is more common to women, who are the only ones who compete in this sport in the Panamerican Games, has the same basic rules as baseball. The main differences are the size of the ball (larger) and the field (smaller), and the duration of the game (which is reduced from nine to seven innings). Also, the softball pitch is made with an underarm motion. But just like baseball, the purpose is to score the most points to win the game.
